Once again we are proud to now share the second batch of the original Eastbourne bush honey as our very own seasonal limited release here in the capital.

Better than ever due to a co-operative 2017/18 summer , it was without challenge as climate extremes, especially high wind, were navigated year round previously due to the outlying geographical  location of this seaside setting.

What was a very unusually hot season with relentless temperatures in the low 30°C  promoted a diverse mixture of blooms with particular luck seen through the vibrant addition of Northern Rātā that generally flowers once every four years.

Eastbourne is very rare in that Rātā & Pohutukawa (  who share the same genus ) grow in close proximity as the former is traditionally found inland vs the coastal being later that makes this honey particularly profound. Interestingly the original test sample of this release  had the team at Massey University who do the pollen tests that identifies the make up of different flowers  'scratching their heads' due to the incredible mixture of different pollen and nectar from both native and garden botanicals...

Some month and a re-test  later we finally received confirmation that roughly 1/3 of this multi-floral composition is categorised as 'unknown/mixed' that makes sense because the limited amount of hives that are situated in this semi-urban environment are presented with a flora smorgasboard ! With this of-course we are left with a very rich and uncommon blend of native & garden flowers offering tremendous vitality through immunity support seldom seen in other free range honey.

Ultimately this release is mainly to be experienced for its one of a kind taste though. We suggest storing your jar in a cool environment away from sunlight and consuming over time by itself . This is because with only a limited amount produced each year supplies are sadly simply quite limited and such precious things are to be savoured to enjoy over time.

We feel a big part of this is because it is traditional, free range or backyard , family honey not commercial intensive farmed that allows us to adobt less macro practises in the art of keeping the very insects. Examples of how we implement this include ; recycling wet frames to feed back the honey we harvest, no over crowded  or moving hive sights , consistant clean water feeding and most importantly gentle handling during hive maintenance.

We cannot forget to thank our hive hosts ofcourse, the bee keeper ( Who has a bad back & sacrifices what little spare time he has outside of work to make it all happen! ) and the community for supporting us . It all means alot to us & the environment so enjoy the honey as it commands arduous labour both by man & bee for you to now enjoy.
